It’s around the age of 13 where things matter more than they did a few years prior.  Things like facebook, shoes and girls, but it’s also around that same age where seriousness is way over rated.  A time where trying to look tough is not an easy thing to do, and your buddy’s silly faces don’t make it easy.  A couple of my favorite football players…. These boys make me laugh and make me so very proud!

Several months ago I met Kim and her beautiful daughters at a football party.  Right away she mentioned that she loved my photos and I was surprised that she had ever even seen my website.  She mentioned that she would love to have a family session sometime, and the conversation changed and we never really discussed pictures.  Then I noticed her youngest had been following my husband Scott, taking care not to get too close, but also not to get too far away.  Now, If you know my husband, you know he isn’t a kid magnet, he doesn’t do silly voices or have much animation, so I was surprised that being so little she would be so interested in him.  When I mentioned to Kim that her daughter seemed to have taken a liking to Scott, she said that her husband was in the military and was serving overseas, so she probably thought Scott resembled her daddy in some way.   My heart melted and I spent the rest of the evening talking to her about her amazing family and the sacrifice they were making. Her husband, Soren, had left life as we know it and volunteered to serve our country.

We became facebook friends and I kept in touch watching all the pictures she uploaded of the kids and a big cardboard cutout of their daddy that affectionately  named “Flat Soren.”  Flat Soren even attended the daddy/ daughter dance.     When Soren arrived safely back on US soil I was so happy for them, and so excited to take pictures of their beautiful family.

Kim & Soren, Thank you so much for sharing your family with me, and thank you for your service to our country and for all that you scarified.  You are appreciated.

This furry family member is BAM… He likes to hang out.

I’ve been working on a ton of photography things, being a good wife and playing chauffeur to my kids as usual, but I wanted to share a sneak peek of a few things in the works…

• First up would be some changes to the blog and website… Did you notice my little sun heart logo has gone into retirement? I kinda miss it already, but the time had come for it to be put to rest.  The story behind the sun heart actually came from when I lived in Arizona.  Phoenix is referred to as the Valley of the Sun, so when you add a little love, a sun heart logo was born. Well, and I also had 2 keychains from the Coach store that overlapped on my keyring one day forming a sun and a heart… So it was kind of meant to be.   It really represented happiness, love, sunny days, everything that made you feel good, but it didn’t necessarily compliment my photos and sometimes distracted from the elegance, so with a fond goodbye, or adios as I sometimes say… I’ll find a new use for you sunshine!   But… Please know I’m still the same sunny, happy person you know and love!  Some bigger changes are coming so check back and hopefully the transformation will be complete in the coming month.

• Next I want to send a big hug to all my past brides that gave me such great reviews and made Burnett Photography one of the recipients of the 2010 Brides Choice Awards! Thank You Girls! I once won a haircut in the 2nd grade, and it was BAD, (notice the capital letters) so I’m not much for contests, but I was honored that my brides said such sweet things!  I love each and every one of them!

• I was having a conversation the other day about canceled weddings and how it is better to cancel the wedding if you know it isn’t going to work out. Which got me thinking…  I went back though all my brides and guess what, every single one of them is my friend on facebook, AND EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM IS STILL MARRIED!   WOW… I’m at 100% over 5 years and I like those odds!

• Then there is my friend David Dismukes, who loaned me his old school Nikon film camera today!  He even gave me 3 rolls of film, now THAT is Southern Hospitality!  Look out people… This takes me back to the college days, well, except I’m not developing these in the darkroom, using my teeth to open the canisters and loading rolls of film in to spools all by myself.  I’ll leave that to the professionals.  Thank You David!

• Lastly, and because blog posts are way more fun with pictures…  I’ll leave you with a shot from a wedding  a few weeks ago…  Ashley and Owen were absolutely amazing and their friends and family were a blast! These reception images were from the gorgeous Moore’s Mill country club in Auburn Alabama.

After a long wait… The new website is finally live… There are a few things that still need some attention and a few more images to add to the galleries, but for all practical purposes… It’s live!    YEAH!!!

Website changes are heading my way!   I forgot how tiring and overwhelming it is to redesign an entire website and portfolio, but I seem to do it about once a year… and it’s that time.

I decided with a move across the country from crazy Arizona to traditional Alabama, it was time to change it up and stay true to my style and make my website fit more with the fun way I approach photography.

The blog has undergone a slight upgrade and will be changing around as well, so don’t too surprised if it changes a few more times before the makeover is complete.

Or maybe I should say, not your average ballerina images.  A few months ago I was contacted by Ashley, a gorgeous ballerina who was hanging up the ballerina flats and wanted to get some fun, artistic images.  Fun and artistic… That I can do…  Here is the gorgeous Ashley in her tutu from the Nutcracker.

Trisha and Dan chose to order a custom designed guestbook with their favorite engagement images.  Their guests will then be able to sign in their book and see all of their fun images.  We had such a great time  shooting their engagement this fall, and I can’t wait to shoot their destination wedding in Sedona, Arizona this May.   These are also available in duplicate copies and make great parent gifts!   Here’s a look at their album design…

Gone are the days of when you would dig out your old photographs and they were weathered and faded.  With today’s technology, the archival paper is made to last much longer. And with so many people archiving their digital images, they will most likely always look as they did the day the image was taken.  Where am I going with this you ask…..  STYLE.

Style is huge part of who you are… like what you wear, and what kind of art you hang on your walls.  I can say my eye is drawn to bright crispy images, but artistically I love to see movement, emotion and and a sense of timeless style.   When I shoot a wedding I put a lot of thought into framing and technique.  Occasionally I shoot an image and I know instantly how I want it to look after post processing.  One thing that has drawn me in is the process of making new photos look old, vintage anyone??  There is something about an image that appears classic, shows film grain, and tells a story or invokes thought.  Unless you go back in time, you most likely won’t be shooting grainy film images in black and white, so the process of looking old has come full circle.  What is new, can now look old.    Although the vintage trend is not for every image nor every bride, it’s a style that adds a special classic look to a select handful of images. What do you think of making new images look old???
